America’s Hoteliers Call for Guidance, Clarity on ADA Website Accessibility

ATLANTA – AAHOA interim president and CEO Rachel Humphrey issued the following statement in support of Sen. Chuck Grassley’s (R-IA) call for the Justice Department to provide greater clarity and guidance regarding how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to websites: “As the Americans with Disabilities Act approaches its third decade of expanding access for all Americans, the absence of any clear guidance on whether and how the ADA applies to private websites continues to expose small businesses to a flood of spurious litigation that lines the pockets of unscrupulous attorneys and leaves the issue of accessibility unresolved.

“AAHOA supports Sen. Grassley’s efforts to work with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to clarify website access under the ADA. Businesses want to make the right investments to serve the disabled community, yet the wave of ADA Title III litigation does nothing but yield inconsistent outcomes and no accessibility standard. We eagerly await the DOJ’s response to the Senator’s questions and reaffirm our commitment to working with disability rights groups and all those with the goal of expanding access.” Senator Grassley’s letter to Attorney General William Barr is accessible on his website.

AAHOA and Extended Stay America Announce Partnership

ATLANTA – The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and Extended Stay America, Inc. Charlotte, N.C., with over 600 branded hotels in the United States, announced a new partnership that will facilitate relationships between the brand and AAHOA’s more than 18,500 members. “The demand for extended-stay properties outpaced supply in 2018, and the innovation we’re seeing from Extended Stay America is exciting,” said AAHOA interim president and CEO Rachel Humphrey. “The strong performance fundamentals in this segment, coupled with decreased interest rates, suggest good development opportunities. We look forward to their presence at AAHOA’s regional conferences and trade shows and at our 2020 Convention and Trade Show in Orlando, Fla.”
